We use a large white, duroc cross breed and they are all born on the farm and raised in open straw barns. We use low stocking densities and lots of straw.
We create specialised diets for every pig in our herd depending on its age. For example, new Mums are fed a high energy diet to ensure optimum milk production and the piglets get off to the very best start. We also bale the straw for their bedding.
At a critical point in a pigs life, we prefer to have our Mums inside in the warm and dry, in a Loose Lactation pen so we can keep a close eye on the process. This is why every week we have higher numbers of piglets kept alive and weaned than an average outdoor born pig.
